The Squires-Belt Story
Jacob Squires and Elmer Belt founded Squires-Belt Material Company in 1913 to meet the fast growing demand for wholesale hay, an important commodity in the era of horse-drawn equipment.
Seeing that automobiles were destined to reduce the market for hay, the partners decided to enter the field of building materials. By 1922 Jacob Squires and Elmer Belt had built a warehouse at the corner of 12th and L Street - now the location of Petco Park, San Diego's new downtown ballpark. In 1953 Squires-Belt Material Company incorporated, with Elmer Belt as President. Jack Benson, who joined the firm in 1935 and married Jane Belt three years later, went on the become the company's first Vice President.
Over the next 60 years, Jack Benson grew the business with the help of his son John and grandson Brad. Their line of products quickly expanded to meet the increasing demands of the building industry. Today, Squires-Belt offers thousands of specialty items that range from stucco, exterior finishes and drywall to metal lathing products and accessories. Those old warehouses may be gone, but the strong foundation that Jacob and Elmer built 90 years ago is still carrying the company into the future.
